Situated within the enchanting Meilinhuaxi Rose Industrial Park in Jingping Village, Dacheng Town, Pingshan County, Yibin, the Palm Toilet stands as the initial spectacle in the park’s entrance parking lot. Functioning not only as a restroom but also embracing the role of a public service space in scenic areas, this architectural gem is nestled in a cove, offering captivating views of rose fields and the adjacent hill. Crafted by Zaixing Architectural Design, the Palm Toilet elegantly balances functionality, aesthetics, and privacy.
Symmetrical Elegance: Design Overview
The Palm Toilet spans two levels, featuring four wooden functional square boxes symmetrically aligned along the central axis. The ground floor houses a disabled toilet, a tool room, and a family bathroom, while the first floor accommodates separate male and female toilets. The innovative layout, with toilet compartments forming a central island, not only facilitates smooth pipeline arrangements but also allows visitors on the ground floor to enjoy unobstructed views of the first floor.
Seamless Integration with Nature
The traffic stairs and handicapped ramp are strategically placed on the hillside, preserving picturesque views for visitors. The sloped roof, supported by steel and wood structures, maximizes natural ventilation efficiency. Shaded by the roof, the space underneath is enclosed by palm panels, offering a serene resting area. Visitors can unwind in this atrium while relishing views of terraced rose fields and the idyllic scenes of villagers’ cultivation.
Innovative Use of Materials and Structure
Incorporating elements of traditional local dwellings, the Palm Toilet takes cues from the mild and rainy climate of Sichuan. The perforated wooden frame system, characteristic of local dwellings, finds expression in the Palm Toilet’s structure. The sloping roof features cost-effective and durable color steel plates, offering practicality and ease of construction. Transparent sun panels illuminate the atrium during the day, transforming it into a beacon at night.
Palm Fiber Innovation: Aesthetic and Practical
In an innovative use of palm fiber sourced from the mountains of southwest China, the Palm Toilet’s outer skin consists of woven palm panels. Balancing privacy and signage, these panels create a visually appealing gradation. Resilient and resistant to wear, water, and moisture, palm panels extend the material’s service life, making them an ideal choice for public toilet construction. The loose internal structure aids ventilation, aligning with regional cultural characteristics.
Cultural Tourism Contribution
As a significant cultural tourism project contributing to the city’s identity as the “Rose City and Romantic Capital,” the Meilinhuaxi industrial park has gained attention from tourists. The Palm Toilet, serving as a ‘prologue’ to the scenic spot, harmonizes with the local environment through its simple yet gentle design, showcasing a rural appearance. Improving the quality and comfort of public restrooms, the Palm Toilet sets a commendable example for local township construction, offering inspiration for future projects.
